Biographical history

Lawrence Sullivan Ross was born on September 27, 1838, at Bentonsport, Iowa Territory, and immigrated to the Republic of Texas in 1839. In 1861 Ross enlisted in the Confederate Arny and was promoted to brigadier general in 1864. He was elected as a delegate to the 1875 Texas Constitutional Convention shortly after he resigned as sheriff in McLennan County where he helped establish the Sheriff's Association of Texas.

Ross became the 19th governor of Texas on January 18, 1887, and served until January 20, 1891. He was then president of Texas A&M College from January 1891 until his death on January 3, 1898.

This collection contains 54 handwritten letters and documents addressed to Lawrence Sullivan Ross during his time as Governor of Texas [1887-1891], and from his time of President of Texas A&M College [1891-1898].
