This U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey marker dated 1935 marking the point at which a triangulation station was established for the purposes of conducting multiple geodetic surveys in the area. The marker is a bronze disk with a diameter of 3.5 inches and a circumference of 10.99 inches. This marker was placed on the Texas A&M campus in 1935 by the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey to identify the position of a horizontal control triangulation station. The station was constructed for the purposes of making observations for at least two survey runs (Austin to Navasota in 1935, and Cameron to Madisonville in 1943). Removed in 2013 because of new campus construction, the marker was originally located some 80 feet east of the northeast corner of what was then the A&M Creamery and 150 feet south-southwest of what was then the railroad depot.

A triangulation station is a type of horizontal control, a mark at a precisely established latitude and longitude. The position of a triangulation station is determined by measuring distances and angles from other stations and is typically associated with nearby reference mark disks and an azimuth mark disk. The marker was originally located on the Texas A&M campus near the former site of the Creamery and was removed due to the Welborn Road construction project.

The marker has a small triangle in the center and the words “Triangulation Station” on the rim. There was a $250 fine or imprisonment for disturbing the mark.

The collection consists of 3 volumes of hazing investigation transcripts, totalling 714 pages.

The Heritage Preservation Oral History Program was designed to preserve for future generations of Aggies the history and traditions of Texas A&M as experienced by a diverse group of people.

The oral histories were largely collected by Haskell Monroe, the director of the program and the Dean of Faculties Emeritus, through an interview process. Haskell Monroe was a history professor at Texas A&M University as well as the President of the University of Texas at El Paso and the Chancellor of the University of Missouri. While at A&M he served as the secretary of the Aspirations Committee. This Committee wrote crucial reports advising changes that would help create the diversity experienced at A&M to this day including racial integration, co-education, and the elimination of the compulsory Corps of Cadets service.

The interviewees, for the Heritage Preservation Oral History Program, ranged from faculty, staff, students, and people highly involved in the university. This was intentionally done to give a diverse and well-rounded history and perception of life at Texas A&M University. These people ranged from university Presidents and their wives, yell leaders, student body presidents, and professors. In the Early Years of the program's history the focus was on A&M in the 1930s and the impact of the Corps. While in later interviews conducted professors and students were interviewed about more specific facets of A&M and individual programs and departments. While the program initially was supposed to only interview about 24 important people to the intuition it grew considerably throughout the process. The interviews were conducted from 1998 to 2002 totaling up to over 200 individual interviews and interviewees.

The Bernard Sbisa Family Collection consists of photographic scrapbooks, personal correspondence, photographs of the Sbisa Family, and early Texas A&M College photographs along with other early college photographs of the campus of Perdue. The items included either have no date or are dated from between 1877 to 1919.

Bernard Sbisa was one of the first Texas A&M College professors who lived and taught the early Texas A&M College.

The E. J. Kyle (1894-1957) Papers contains reports, correspondence, speeches, articles, applications, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, programs, pictures, memorandums, lists, and resolutions. Materials include correspondence, reports, speeches, and articles on E. J. Kyle's attempts to acquire more land and construct new buildings for the School of Agriculture at Texas A & M College. Other speeches and articles written by E. J. Kyle are concerned with subjects as cotton, soil conservation, and the cultivation of vegetables, fruits and nuts, particularly pecans.

Also present are reports Kyle wrote pertaining to Texas A & M College's enrollment plans and teaching techniques in Agricultural classes. Since Kyle was the head of many different programs at Texas A & M College, his papers contain applications and other information regarding the Land Prize, Anderson-Clayton Company Scholarship, and programs on Short Courses taught from 1913 to 1936. In addition to his academic duties, Kyle was also deeply involved with various types of research and the papers contain a few of the booklets, articles, and resolutions pertaining to the Soil Erosion Project, Frozen Food Research, and Texas Wildlife Research.

Correspondence in the papers deals with not only E. J. Kyle's work, but also contains letters from former students, commendations sent to Kyle, and letters concerning the naming of Kyle Field sports arena on the Texas A & M College campus.

Photographs contained in the collection are pertain to agricultural topics, such as cattle and pecan trees, the NYA program, Texas A & M College buildings, Texas A & M College football teams and sports events, and Kyle Field.Several football team rosters, programs from football games, newspaper clippings about sports events, and correspondence dealing with Kyle's position on the Athletic Council represent Kyle's close connection with many of the Texas A & M College athletics program.

Also present is a certificate of Kyle's appointment to the Farm Credit Association.

This collection includes the manuscript diaries of the commander of the U.S.S. Von Steuben, 317 pages.12 mo (6X4 inches), original calf, worn; a few minor creases and tears, lacking the last 7 leaves (not part of diary proper).  Vp, January 1 to September 7, 1918; April 8 to June 21, 1919; and circa 1928. There are two bound diary volumes and one typescript entitled "Battle Between the U.S.S. Von Steuben and German Submarine", June 18, 1818.

This collection contains letters from Jefferson Davis to F.R. Lubbock.

This collection consists of 62 manuscript envelopes and letters (all in German) from William Bretschneider (A&M College class of 1897) to his sisters and mother between 1894, 1897 and 1900 when he worked for the Texas Railroad, and New Orleans Railroad.

The papers include two letters, one from F. C. Bolton, Dean of Engineering in 1927, to Mr. Loving's father, Major J. J. Loving of Fort Sam Houston, TX. The other is dated the same year from the registrar, informing Major Loving that his son was second in his class for the 1926-27 academic year. Also included are 1) Program for "Commencement Sunday Convocation," May 29, 1927; and 2) two military magazines related to World War II, the first to the radar defenses in England with which J. J. Loving, Jr. was associated, and a broader magazine showing the devastation in Europe following D-Day and the surrender of Germany. Both magazines are marked "Confidential" for the time.

The torch used to light 1989 Texas Aggie Bonfire, which is a student tradition where students participate in building a wood bonfire each November, traditionally, before the game against the University of Texas.

Series of autograph letters and cards, by No. 8865 Lance Corporal Gordon Clippingdale ('Clip') of the 5th Battalion, City of London Rifles, to his wife Bridget of 141 Willesden Lane, London NW, comprising over 50 autograph letters, postcards and pre-printed sickness forms, the first fourteen written when in training and travelling out to Belgium, the remainder either from the front or while convalescing in hospital in Rouen, giving a graphic account of life in the trenches in the first few months of the war: "The country is absolutely laid waste & yet a fair number of the inhabitants remain, though there is scarcely a whole window left in the village. The place rocks continuously from the explosion of our guns firing but we sleep calmly through it all, being quite used to it by now. The mud is even worse than the frost, being liquid & well up to the knee, our putties & boots being nearly rotted to pieces" (30 November 1914); the series containing some outspoken observations that seem to have escaped the censor's eye: "It makes me wild to see in the papers, so many thousand witnesses to Football match between so & so. Bah. And over here, its work day & night week in week out, ruined churches & villages, fields ploughed by shells, harvests trampled in, homeless people & killing going on day by day. And at home they wear a little flag in their coat & say 'Another victory' or 'No further news', but little they trouble that every day some poor devil goes to his last rest" (3 December 1914); with two letters written during the Christmas Truce (see note below); the earlier letters, written when in training, also showing an eye for sharp observation and the unexpected: "Suddenly we came to a little green lane upon the right, facing an ancient inn & across the end of the lane were standing a row of men in brilliant uniforms & at the end of the line the King in a dark uniform looking very ill & tired out" (20 September 1914); together with a group of photographs, his certificates of birth (8 April 1885) and death (15 June 1955), and letters of consolation to his widow from work colleagues at B.A. Smith & Sons, Chartered Accountants, and LRB veterans, some 100 pages, both Christmas Truce letters of one page each, written on small folio letter-forms (c.240 x 150 mm.), with address, censor's signature and postmarks on the verso (date-stamped by the Army Post Office 30 December and 5 January), the rest of the letters and cards bearing censors' signatures, stamps, postmarks etc., some minor creasing and contemporaneous staining etc., but overall in good attractive condition, 4to, 8vo and on postcards, 31 August 1914 to 17 February 1915 -- Bonham's Lot 169" - bookseller's description.

This archive documents Lt. Bewman's time in the American Ambulance Service during World War I (WWI).

This archive includes a large amount of war dated letters and documents, a scrapbook with war clippings, and other war-related items kept by either Lt. Bewman Gates Dawes or a member of his family, and an mss diary in both ink and pencil covering January 8 - July 10, 1918. This 4x6 in. diary in dark cloth boards is printed in France with heading in French...[Dawes] was an engineer in France at least as early as 1916 and joined the American Ambulance service in 1917, then a supply company in the French Army and later the 17th Engineers Co. with the American Expeditionary Forces in France, and it appears from his diary that his company was in charge of a major port and the distribution of the supplies that arrived to the front.....These letters give very detailed accounts of life in port and while in Paris...Most of the letters are from 1917...The scrapbook has a large chromolithograph on the cover of 'American Ambulance Service' in action with pasted title below reading 'B.G. Dawes Jr./May 1917-1919'. It is packed with newspaper clippings, many of which must have come from Marietta papers and deal directly with Dawes and other local boys serving in France. It also has several telegrams from the war, pamphlets, 'American Ambulance Service' document, a photograph of Dawes, his last will and testament, and much more. This collection functions as a record of commencements done by Texas A&M's College of Veterinary Medicine. These programs are reports to the public, who attends the commencement, and clearly list all candidates for graduation.

This collection contains telegrams, correspondence, and photographs of Joel Hunt, who played Quarterback for the Texas A&M Football team from 1925 to 1927. The items appear to be from Joel Hunt’s scrapbook that was disassembled into this collection.

The Louis L. McInnis Papers contains correspondence, along with other miscellaneous papers relating to Louis Lowry McInnis’ time in office at Texas A&M College. Items include some personal correspondence, along with university correspondence from Texas A&M College and Prairie View College during the period of 1872 to 1908.

This collection includes official documents pertaining to proposed 2006 renovation plans for Texas A&M’s Military Walk including designs, presentations, firm history, engineer reports, designs, and certifications.

The Military Walk has been an important landmark since 1876 at Texas A&M. Originally the walk was a dirt road and was paved as a narrow street in the 1940s, later paved over again like a concrete sidewalk. The walk spans 1,500 feet from Sbisa Dining Hall to the Rudder/Memorial Student Center complex. The 2006-2010 renovation to the Military Walk included a brick makeover with lights, benches, and memorial plates.

This collection contains nearly 1000 items related to the civil rights movement from 1955-1975. The early part of this collection (1955-67) formed the basic research for Levy's book Voluntary Servitude, Whites in the Negro Movement, (New York: Appleton-Century, 1968). The collection includes hundreds of pages of writings, publications, bulletins, internal memos, broadsides, hand-printed magazines, etc. Prominent figures of the civil rights and revolutionary movements, organizations, and committees are covered in the collection. The collection also includes two photographs of President Lyndon B. Johnson signing the 1964 Civil Rights Act with Rev. Martin L. King, Jr. and other luminaries of the civil rights movement.

This collection contains transcripts, witness reports (photocopies included), and newspaper clippings regarding a fight that occurred between A&M and Baylor students at Cotton Palace in Waco on October 30, 1926.

This collection contains photographs taken by members of the 166th Signal Corps as well as the Associated Press just after the liberation of the concentration camps from the Nazis in 1945.

"A harrowing array of images, including 26 silver gelatin prints, each approx. 8" x 9 3/4", all stamped on verso with detailed captions and other information (some stamped "confidential"), as well as 30 smaller scale photographs (image sizes approx. 3 1/2" x 4 1/2") printed on larger paper stock (6 3/4" x 5") with type-written captions under the image, almost all of the images documenting Nazi horrors perpetrated in several concentration camps, as well as an envelope in which a member of the signal corps sent some of the images home to the USA. Germany 1945. Taken by photographers accompanying the troops that liberated the camps, these images provide detailed and unflinching documentation of the extreme horrors endured in Buchenwald, Ohrdruf, Hergenhein, and Schwartenxenfield and other camps. There are many images of dead bodies in various states, both individual and in masses, barely living survivors, mutilations, images of the structure of the camps themselves, civilians being forced to transport and bury the dead, and, for some reason particularly horrifically, a photo of a decorative tattoo that was skinned off a body and used as a decoration on the wall [of] the Nazi SS quarters at Buchenwald. An envelope from S/Sgt V. Amoroso to Mrs. Amoroso, which apparently contained the smaller images, is also present."

This collection contains one Treasury Warrant (February 13, 1861), one $100 share in the Consolidated Fund of Texas (September 1, 1837), one $10 treasury note (December 10, 1838), one $100 stock certificate in the 10 percent Consolidated Fund (June 15, 1840), and one $2 Confederate note and a $3 Confederate note (both dated July 7, 1862).

This collection consists of a 1925 paddle incised with the name of Luther Goodrich Jones and signed by him and 25 other people, who served on the Texas A&M College faculty.

Professor Jones served in the Agronomy Department from the early 1920s until his retirement in 1950.

This collection contains 58 items are related to slavery or emancipation in the states of Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Texas and the countries of Cuba, the Caribbean, Jamaica, and Paris, France.

The descriptive write-up provided by Respess and William Reese, Company is used in the listing of documents. Each document purchased has a title, date, and some have an abbreviated transcription of the text.

The Texas document recounts the hiring, auctions, renting, and transferring ownership of slaves. The Missouri documents concern the purchase and transferring of ownership of slaves named Nancy, George, Phebe, Washington, Lucinda, Madison, Benjamin, and Sarah. No last names or additional information is provided except that Nancy is a Mulatto Woman and George is "of the age of seventeen or thereabouts." Of particular note are two documents, a Texas free woman of color filing a complaint regarding an illegal beating by a group of five men one and the other document is from Missouri and details a sale of slaves by a woman, a rarer document than those recording sales by men.

This collection consists of a group of thirty issues of The Argonaut (1879-1889) containing twenty-three science-fiction stories by Robert Duncan Milne, some in two or three parts. References to "Moskowitz" indicate his edition of eleven stories by Milne, Into the Sun (West Kingston, RI: Donald M. Grant, Publisher, 1980). Eighteen of the stories in this lot were not published in Moskowitz's edition and have never been reprinted, to the best of our knowledge.

The time period covered in this lot is 1879 to 1889. The Argonaut was generally printed on good, non-pulpy paper and, barring abuse, remains in good condition and can be handled with due care without fear of crumbling paper. The Argonaut was a weekly literary newspaper published in San Francisco starting in 1878 and running well into the 20th century. It contained political commentary as well as departmental reviews of books, drama, food, fashion, etc. Ambrose Bierce wrote weekly columns during the first two and a half years of its existence. The editors had a penchant for weird and fantastic fiction and published such material by W. C. Morrow, Emma Frances Dawson, Robert Duncan Milne and a host of other minor authors, as well as offering translations of European material in this vein. Milne was evidently popular among The Argonaut readers, for his stories are often featured on the front page.

This collection contains a variety of documents related to William Harrison Mays, an African American cowboy living in Corpus Christi, TX during the late 19th and early 20th century, and his family. The collection consists of tax receipts, promissory notes, land deeds, and receipts for lumber and building loan payments, photographs, and correspondences from which the researcher is able to track the development of a family over the course of three generations.

Of particular interest is a letter written by W. H. Mays' grandson, Roby Williams, dated September 12, 1982, in which he claims that his grandfather, "was a gun toten cow puncher with the Kings and Kennedys who used to ride over the border and steal Mexican's cattle and bring them back to Kings ranch and brand them KR. Grandpa knew he was living such a hard and risky life, he knew he was subject to being killed on some of these adventures and cattle drives up to Abilene, Kansas, so he didn't buy anything in his name. If he was arrested for cattle rustling, they couldn't take his property." One of the deeds dated 1872 may dispute this claim as it conveys to "Harrison Mays, Colored" a property in Corpus Christi for the sum of twenty-five gold dollars. However, all the tax receipts thereafter for the property are made out to a Clarissa Sinclair (also known as Alice Sinclair, William Harrison Mays' wife).

Other items of interest include a photograph, circa 1865, of two African-American men each standing with a leg up on a wooden box with a large bag marked "$1,000." The handwritten caption on the back reads: "Uncle Willie Cox on left. Just after a win in a cock's fight. Bag contains $1,000.00 in gold. San Luis Portisi, Mexico."

This collection was compiled to preserve the sentiments of people in many walks of life across Texas A&M University and the surrounding area of Bryan-College Station.
