Lewis Shiner was born December 30, 1950, in Eugene Oregon. Shiner attended Vanderbilt University and Southern Methodist University. He is a science fiction writer and editor, along with a variety of other work. Shiner was nominated for a Nebula Award and a Philip K. Dick Award in 1984, and for a World Fantasy Award in 1993.

Shiner began his career as a science fiction writer in 1977, although he has also written a number of non-genre works as well. In addition to his many short stories (which Shiner now makes freely available on the Web through his Fiction Liberation Front), he has written several novels, including Frontera(1984), which was nominated for the 1985 Nebula Award for Best Novel and the 1984 Philip K. Dick Award; Deserted Cities of the Heart(1988); Slam(1991); and Glimpses(1991), which won the 1994 World Fantasy Award for Best Novel.

Shiner is considered, along with William Gibson and Bruce Sterling, one of the original writers in the 'cyberpunk' genre.
