Biographical history

Jay Martin Poole, originally J. Martene Pettypool, was born on August 6, 1934, in Clinton, OK. He worked as the Assistant Director for Collection Development from 1981 to 1985 and the Assistant Director of Collection and Bibliographic Services from 1991 to 1992 at the Sterling C. Evans Library, Texas A&M University. Jay consistently was consulted in the latter part of his life on projects regarding libraries at A&M, such as the Computing and Study Complex (the Annex).

He kept up constant communications with a variety of people; Jay was clearly an easy confidant, well-liked and loved by all of his friends. His agendas and daybooks dating over 15 years, as well as his neatly organized personal papers, means he was quite meticulous in documenting his life. He lived a life full of laughter, generosity, and widespread influence. Jay's time at Texas A&M was marked by a commemorative tree on campus.

Content and structure elements

Scope and content

This collection consists of documents, daybooks, and photographs pertaining to the life of Jay Martin Poole, whose dedication to academic libraries brought him to Sterling C. Evans Library at Texas A&M University for many years, working as both library administration and a librarian consultant. The majority of the collection are letters written and received by Poole, both personal and professional. Another large portion of the collection contains daybooks and agendas, in which Poole kept an extensive log of his daily activities from 1963 to 1993. Jay's librarian background has given us an incredibly informative record of his life, his personality, and his experiences. A few significant topics and references represented in the collection are the GLBT community, collection and bibliographic services, CHOICE Magazine, academic librarian work, Texas A&M University, Sterling C. Evans Library, the University of Texas at Austin, The College of Santa Fe, Univerisity of California at Irvine, and genealogical records.

System of arrangement

The original arrangement of the collection created by Jay Poole was maintained throughout processing. The names of the folders remain similar to the labels Poole used to catalog his own records. Some folders have been organized chronologically, but most remain the same in the organization. The most significant changes to the arrangement of the boxes are to the folders containing the daybooks, agendas, and photographs. In Box 2, these have been arranged chronologically by folder and the photographs have been sorted into identified and unidentified categorizations.
