This collection contains letters dated between 1897-1923, primarily between brothers Max Goeth and Conrad Goeth (C. A.). The brothers opened two businesses together, La Salle Truck Farm, and Cotulla Farming and Irrigation Company. The second business was a contracting company for farm land. The two brothers leased land and sold crops, and it is inferred that Max and Conrad had two other brothers named Richard and Eddie, and that their father was Chas. Goeth (C. G.).

This collection is comprised of 12 scrapbooks (compiler unknown) that contain magazine and newspaper clippings, maps, and other printed ephemera chronicling the Spanish-American War (April-August 1898) in Cuba, and the Boxer Rebellion (1899-1901) in China. No commentary or other original text has been provided by the compiler. The volumes differ slightly, but all are bound in either dark green or dark brown cloth, with maroon quarter calf. Most of the spine covers are damaged or missing. The scrapbooks measure from 20-25 cm. high and from 24-29 cm. wide.

This collection consists of a photo scrapbook with six small charcoal images that depict African-American life in the rural south with an unrelated pictorial on-lay on the upper cover, all tied together with string.

The James C. Nagle Photographic Album is a Kodak album containing photographs of Texas A&M College campus, circa 1900.

This collection contains three scrapbooks, one of which belonged to Irene Claghorn, filled with photographs and mementos dating from the early 1900s through the 1940s.

The Cherokee Freedmen Collection housed at Cushing Memorial Library and Archive is composed of written interviews of African Americans and Native Americans conducted by the United States Department of the Interior’s Commission to the Five Civilized Tribes. The Commission to the Five Civilized Tribes also became known as the Dawes Commission, after its chairman Senator Henry Dawes of Massachusetts. The interviews, testimonies, and affidavits relate to the applications of African Americans that were denied enrollment as Cherokee Freedmen during the Dawes Commission. The collection encompasses over 500 documents from 30 different applications affecting over 100 people. Most of the documents are filed with their original envelopes. The documents in the Cherokee Freedmen Collection are dated from 1900 to 1907. Most of the hearings were conducted at Fort Gibson or Muskogee, Oklahoma. There is a high degree of intertextuality between the files regarding people and places mentioned.

In addition to the interviews, there are also interdepartmental letters between various commissioners and the Secretary of the Interior, and notices to applicants and their lawyers. The collection offers a primary source on the arbitration involved in the decision of who did and did not count as Cherokee Freedmen, as well as frontier life in general both before and after the war. The language used vividly reveals the prevailing racial attitudes of the day, chiefly toward African Americans and Native Americans; casual use is made of pejorative terms, and open prejudice is occasionally voiced. All of the applications that are contained within the Cherokee Freedmen Collection housed at Cushing Library were rejected, denying the applicants citizenship to the Cherokee Nation.

In 1866, each of the Five Tribes (Cherokee, Chickasaws, Choctaws, Creeks, and Seminoles) that had sided with the Confederacy during the Civil War entered treaties with the United States to abolish slavery in the Native American Territory and established provisions that addressed the status and rights of the freed slaves and people of African descent that lived among the Five Tribes. Since the Cherokee Nation sided with the Confederacy during the Civil War, the United States’ punishment for the Cherokee Nation was to give “all the rights of a native Cherokee” to all freed slaves who still lived within the Cherokee Nation.

In 1877, the Dawes Act (also called the General Allotment Act) was passed under President Grover Cleveland, allowing the federal government to break up tribal land to try to force Native Americans to assimilate. The federal government took the 150 million acres of land that was already controlled by the tribes. The commission's mission was to divide tribal land into 160-acre plots which were then divided among the members of the tribe. As part of this process, the Commission either accepted or rejected applicants for tribal membership based on whether the tribal government had previously recognized the applicant as a member of the tribe and other legal requirements. Applicants were categorized as Citizens by Blood, Citizens by Marriage, Minor Citizens by Blood, New Born Citizens by Blood, Freedmen (African Americans formerly enslaved by tribal members), New Born Freedmen, and Minor Freedmen. Once the land was divided amongst the citizens of the Native American Nations, the United States government sold the surplus tribal lands to non-Native Americans for a profit.

Many of the testimonies include personal histories, sometimes dating as far back as the 1830s, and great detail is given on the moving of slaves to and from the Cherokee Nation during the Civil War. Notable pieces include accounts of runaway slaves returning to their separated families, individual reactions to Emancipation, and a letter directly to the Secretary of the Interior personally written by an applicant, requesting that her case be re-opened. The letter, polite and heartfelt but clearly frustrated, is spelled phonetically. Many of the applicants in the collection are related to one another. For example, Henry Albert is the son of Martha Albert, who was a freed slave of the Cherokee Nation. Henry Albert was over the age of 21, he had to apply to be enrolled as a Cherokee Freedmen for himself and his children. Since Henry was born free, most of the information contained within the file is based on his mother, Martha Albert’s testimony, and other witnesses who testified on her behalf or on behalf of the Cherokee Nation. The investigation on whether Martha Albert was truly a freed slave of the Cherokee Nation or not determined whether or not her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews would also be eligible to be enrolled as Cherokee Freedmen. The files of Henry Albert, Barnes Family, and Lula Knalls all contain copies of Martha Albert’s testimonies. Another interesting letter that allowed for the subject listing to include "Leonid Meteor Showers" refers to one elderly woman's age which was determined by the fact that she was 16 "the year the stars fell". The commissioner noted that that was in 1832, and he was there himself. The following year, '33, was the year that the Leonid shower was officially "discovered” and caused something of a panic in the eastern US; no one knew what meteors were, yet!

Several of the locations mentioned were Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, Muskogee, Oklahoma, and Fort Smith, Arkansas. As well as Tahlequah, Oklahoma, the capitol of the Cherokee Nation, and Goingsnake District, now Adair County, Oklahoma, which was the location of the Goingsnake Massacre. Occasionally the communities cited in the interviews have since become ghost towns, been absorbed into larger cities, or changed names. Many of the testimonies also included interviews with both Confederate and Union soldiers.

A few historical figures were involved in the Cherokee Freedmen trials. Namely, Ethan Allen Hitchcock served as the United States Secretary of the Interior under Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt from 1899 to 1907. Also, the attorneys for the Cherokee Nation, James Davenport and W.W. Hastings (in all likelihood, William Wirt. referenced as "W. W. Hastings" in transcripts, but a William Wirt Hastings, of Cherokee heritage and from Oklahoma, was an attorney who worked in private practice, as the attorney general for the Cherokee Nation, and then as the national attorney for the Nation from 1907. The dates do match up, and there is a W. W. Hastings Hospital in Tahlequah, given by William Wirt when he was in Congress, as a gift) both of whom later served as U.S. Representatives for Oklahoma.

The affidavits, correspondence, and any support materials are arranged in alphabetical order by the surname of the applicant. Note: File 22 is in critical need of preservation.

The collection contains various publications about Mebane's cotton, including pamphlets, and newspaper and magazine articles. There are many correspondences to A. D. Mebane complimenting and ordering his cottonseed. Because of the involvement with the Texas Cotton Breeders Association, the collection includes speeches given at the Association meetings.

1-1: Four-And-Twenty-Blackbirds Original Holograph Manuscript, circa 1965

• A holograph working draft by Helen Thomas (headed, possibly in her hand, at the top "Foreword to 'Four and Twenty Blackbirds' by Helen Thomas" in blue ink), of the foreword to a new edition of her late husband's children's work, beginning: "These stories were written during one of the happiest periods of our lives at Elses Farm on the weald of Kent. Though practically the whole of our married years were spent in rural parts of England, the surroundings and [illegible words] of Else Farm were the most congenial we were to know, and here we were not only in a… lovely part of England… but we lived at the heart of a fairly large, prosperous and well conducted farm…"
• Edward Thomas' children's book (expansions of proverb tales), Four-And-Twenty-Blackbirds, was originally published by Duckworth & Co., in 1915. In 1965, another edition of the book, with the tales rearranged, was published by The Bodley Head. This new edition featured illustrations by Margery Gill and a foreword by Helen Thomas.

  1-2: Letter from Clifford Bax to Eleanor Farjeon., April 14, 1917

• Written within days of Edward Thomas' death at the Front: "… Your note has shocked me very profoundly. I had always a powerful impression that Edward would fall in France, but it is very hard to realize that his companionship is gone out of our lives… I am more concerned about Helen than about you, for her I do not know. Perhaps, like Edward, she has no sense of the soul's independence of space and what we call time: and I am afraid lest she may suffer from tormenting regrets that their life was not more harmonious. There is nothing that I can do for her spirit, nor try to do without unwarranted intrusion: but is there anything that I could do for her and for the children of a man whom I held dear? If their financial position adds worry to the great grief of her heart, could we not find a few people with whom I could get together an annual fund? … I hope from my heart that you are able to soar out of the natural sorrow that these mysterious changes bring… I must write a tiny note to Helen. If you do not get it while you are with her, destroy it." In a postscript, Bax writes: "Ah no, we are not froth of a few brief years: and we shall one day know again the sweetness of finding an old friend loved so long ago."

  These letters were published in a pamphlet, privately printed for Alan Clodd at the Tragara Press, which was issued upon the centenary of Thomas' birth. Reading in part

• "[July 26, 1904] Very many thanks for the interesting photographs of me and particularly for the one of Nevinson… My own do surprise me - naturally. My wife says they are all good in different ways… though she agrees with me that too much coat accompanies the smallest of the four heads… [E]vidently if I am at all tired, it becomes very obvious indeed in 20 seconds! …"
• "[July 28, 1904] I admire your picture of Ely very much and thank you heartily for it … I do hope you will not quite see all of the faults in the little book…"
• "[December 26, 1907] Many thanks for the beautiful photograph of Beaucaire. I hope I shall see the book when it comes… Do you know the Memoirs? They are full of the warm south, happy, high spirited, genuinely rustic, dignified. I am just off to Minsmere to try to write a book about Jefferies…"
• "[December 30, 1912] The photograph is excellent as before and I look forward to seeing the series which Hooton told me you were doing, or am I imagining that you might well have been doing? …"

Together with a copy of the pamphlet Four Letters to Frederick Evans, which was limited to 150 copies, and in which the following information on Evans is given: "Frederick H. Evans was born in 1852; he was well-known as a bookseller in the City of London and as the discoverer of the work of Aubrey Beardsley; later he achieved fame as a photographer and was made Honorary Member of the Royal Photographic Society. He died in 1943. The frontispiece is one of the portraits made by Evans in 1904 referred to in the first letter."

1-4: Two letters between Edward Thomas to W. B. Parker, March 7, 1902; Undated

• To the publishing house of Houghton Mifflin's representative, W.B. Parker, concerning his rejection of the submission by Thomas: "Many thanks for the gentle muffling blow you have delivered. But you do not say whether the 'Atlantic' would care for 'Isoud with the White Hands' which I suggested might be submitted to the Editor. If Mr. Duckworth has not called… you may safely return my M.S. You would greatly oblige me if you would submit 'Isoud' to the Editor of the Atlantic…" Annotated by Thomas (cross-written diagonally) across the text "in answer to Parker's letter regarding my Horae Solitaire".
• Together with the typed "rejection letter" to which Thomas is replying, which reads in part: "It is with quite unwonted reluctance and regret that I am writing you a letter in what I must admit is the customary key for us - of declination… I cannot do it yet with all the sang froid that would seem appropriate… I had read the papers with so much interest, and some of them with such positive pleasure that I had a strong preference for seeing them made into a book. The collective judgment, however, is against me, and I am obliged to confess that it seems to be sound…"

"Isoud with the White Hands", a previously unpublished essay, first appeared in Thomas' Horae Solitaire, which was issued by Duckworth & Co., of London in 1902. The American edition of this book, issued by E.P. Dutton & Co. of New York, was to become Thomas' first work to be released in America.

The E. J. Kyle (1894-1957) Papers contains reports, correspondence, speeches, articles, applications, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, programs, pictures, memorandums, lists, and resolutions. Materials include correspondence, reports, speeches, and articles on E. J. Kyle's attempts to acquire more land and construct new buildings for the School of Agriculture at Texas A & M College. Other speeches and articles written by E. J. Kyle are concerned with subjects as cotton, soil conservation, and the cultivation of vegetables, fruits and nuts, particularly pecans.

Also present are reports Kyle wrote pertaining to Texas A & M College's enrollment plans and teaching techniques in Agricultural classes. Since Kyle was the head of many different programs at Texas A & M College, his papers contain applications and other information regarding the Land Prize, Anderson-Clayton Company Scholarship, and programs on Short Courses taught from 1913 to 1936. In addition to his academic duties, Kyle was also deeply involved with various types of research and the papers contain a few of the booklets, articles, and resolutions pertaining to the Soil Erosion Project, Frozen Food Research, and Texas Wildlife Research.

Correspondence in the papers deals with not only E. J. Kyle's work, but also contains letters from former students, commendations sent to Kyle, and letters concerning the naming of Kyle Field sports arena on the Texas A & M College campus.

Photographs contained in the collection are pertain to agricultural topics, such as cattle and pecan trees, the NYA program, Texas A & M College buildings, Texas A & M College football teams and sports events, and Kyle Field.Several football team rosters, programs from football games, newspaper clippings about sports events, and correspondence dealing with Kyle's position on the Athletic Council represent Kyle's close connection with many of the Texas A & M College athletics program.

Also present is a certificate of Kyle's appointment to the Farm Credit Association.

This collection consists of letters written by or about Edward Thomas, an English author, and one manuscript of a foreword written by his wife, Helen Thomas. The subject of each one varies from Edward Thomas' death, a rejection letter for a short story he later published elsewhere, to general correspondence with a photographer friend, Frederick Evans, and Mrs. Thomas' foreword which was added to a new edition of her then-late husband's children's book, Four-and-Twenty Blackbirds.

The collection came with detailed notes on each item, as well as a transcription of what is written on the original pieces of paper. Thus, it was copied to this finding guide, as a helpful aid to deciphering the handwriting.
