Henry Tin Chin Loo Chinese Literature Collection

Each title, due to it's fragile nature and Chinese language, has been placed either in a four flap customized box or located in a holinger for those titles not cataloged. Each titles has a color copy of the title page on top for ease of accessibility.

This collection contains correspondence throughout the life of Hernan H. Contreras, both personal and professional, descriptions of his family home, a warranty deed on property owned by the Contreras family in Starr County, a map of these lots, photographs of family and coworkers in the U.S. Department of Immigration office in Starr County, an autograph book from his public school career, utility bills, receipts, junk mail, and oil and gas leases.

The collection also contains a multitude of papers from Mr. Contreras' wife's family, particularly those of her father, Casamiro Perez Alvares. The contents of these papers include oil and gas leases, utility bills, newspaper articles, correspondence with the U.S. Marshal's office in Galveston, subpoenas, arrest warrants, witness testimonies, receipts, government bulletins, poll tax receipts, land and city tax receipts, family photographs, marriage licenses, wedding invitations, funeral notices, personal letters, business letters, bank statements, checks, deposits, Christmas cards, a pamphlet on communism, a report card, ration sheets from World War I, Letters to the Editor of Newsweek magazine, articles on Estela Contreras' run for political office, and a picture of Estela Contreras from 1993. There is also a collection of reels accompanying all the paper items.

H.M.S. Alfred Crew Station Book

This collection contains the crew station book of the H.M.S. Alfred (3rd rate 74, built 1778). Unpaginated [276].

The H.M.S. Alfred was in the harbor for service from 1799 until she was broken up in 1814. This notebook was used for training crews for the Napoleonic wars, and it gives very detailed accounts of the jobs from getting up the anchor, to furling sails.

Huntsville Prison Siege Clippings Collection

This collection contains newspaper articles from the Huntsville Item about the Huntsville Prison Siege that lasted from July 24th to August 3rd, 1974. Fred Carrasco, a life sentence inmate, smuggled firearms into his cell, and with two other inmate accomplices, he took fifteen hostages, 11 being prison workers and 4 being inmates. The convicts walked the hostages to an escape car they had arranged, but officers and FBI agents shot them with a fire hose, compelling the convicts to kill two hostages and then for Carrasco to apparently kill himself. The other two convicts were sentenced to death row and the siege would become the longest prison siege in US history.

Irvin M. Atkins "Water Mills of Texas" Manuscript

This collection includes the manuscript, Water Mills of Texas on early agriculture, and one personal letter to David Schultz from Dudley T. Smith explaining the manuscript contents.

The manuscript, unfortunately, was not completed or published before Atkins's passing and was his last major project among his many great histories. It remains unedited and "Contains considerable information about early agriculture, the use of horsepower and mechanization, and the processing of wheat and other grains into flour. The photographs are unique and the text gives insights into early foundations of industrialization in Texas- mostly along "fall lines" where numerous rivers in Texas dropped in elevation and water power could be harnessed."

The manuscript totals 69 pages, bibliography included, with the first-page giving a perspective about the paper and its goals.

In addition there are approximately 775 35 mm slides of the 1980s oil boom in Central Texas.

The papers include two letters, one from F. C. Bolton, Dean of Engineering in 1927, to Mr. Loving's father, Major J. J. Loving of Fort Sam Houston, TX. The other is dated the same year from the registrar, informing Major Loving that his son was second in his class for the 1926-27 academic year. Also included are 1) Program for "Commencement Sunday Convocation," May 29, 1927; and 2) two military magazines related to World War II, the first to the radar defenses in England with which J. J. Loving, Jr. was associated, and a broader magazine showing the devastation in Europe following D-Day and the surrender of Germany. Both magazines are marked "Confidential" for the time.
