Ava Johnson Cox grew up in the Hill Country along with her first cousin President Lyndon B. Johnson. She taught school in various towns around the Hill Country area as well as recounting stories of early ranch life in this remote area. Ava also hosted pioneer presentations at the LBJ National Historical Park.

This collection consists of various correspondence, photographs, short handwritten manuscripts, and oral history communications with transcripts describing Ava Johnson's life, and work as a women cattle ranger in Texas.

The collection was compiled by Cynthia Ott, who interviewed Ava Johnson Cox with the intent of publishing a history of early 20th-century life in what is known as the Hill Country of Texas (highlighting Blanco, Gillespie, and Hays counties).

Historique de la conservation

Material housed at Evans library in 1992 and transferred to Cushing Memorial Library and Archives in 1996. Items were included in an aggregate collection titled "Texas Historical Collection" in the late 1990s by David Chatham. The collection was originally processed by Stephanie Elmquest in the early 2000s.

Audio material donated and transcribed by Cynthia Rose and donated to Evans Library. The material was later transferred to Cushing Memorial Library and Archives.
